Celebrating International Volunteer Day

Let’s Help Each Other

In order to promote volunteering around the world, the United Nations General Assembly established International Volunteer Day on December 5 each year.  This year’s theme of International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2022 is solidarity through volunteering.

This initiative serves as a reminder of the ability of humanity as a whole to effect change for the better through volunteerism. The day honors the countless people who give their time to volunteering. Despite numerous setbacks, they carry on with their task in secret from the others. All of these volunteers put forth a lot of effort. The majority of volunteers are also unpaid. The work may involve rescuing animals, assisting the elderly, helping the poor, educating the unprivileged and more. More than a billion people give of their time, talents, and wisdom to better their communities. Volunteers are present at all levels of society, helping with anything from giving practical care to disadvantaged children and adults to giving advice on complex technical and legal concerns. To their jobs, each one brings a unique set of skills.

Amina Mohammed, the UN’s deputy secretary-general, thanks volunteers for their contributions on this special day, noting that they “bring concrete solutions to development challenges and for the common good.”

History

The UN General Assembly was the first body to recognize the significance of volunteers’ contributions on a global scale. The value of volunteering was emphasised in resolution 40/212 from the 17th of December 1985. It was decided to recognize December 5 as International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development as a result. Governments have taken steps to increase public understanding of the value of volunteer work. People from all around the world are now volunteering their services in increasing numbers.
